Taking Action

Be a Savvy Voter

Now that we know the new national rules, we must watch our state and local jurisdiction and make sure that they live up to the new demands. To keep up, the details are described right here.

Before election day, contact your local election administration and encourage them to get on the ball.

Is your polling place accessible to people with disabilities?

  • Are you still voting on a punch ballot or lever machine?
  • Volunteer or sign up to be a paid election worker to help in neighborhoods where residents need extra help.
  • Organize a team of election educators to go into neighborhoods before elections and teach people how to vote and understand the ballot.
On election day:
  • Are your poll workers helping people use the machines and allowing people to redo their vote if they think they made a mistake?
  • Are people in low income and new immigrant neighborhoods getting extra help or being intimidated by mail or by people on the street?
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION WITH YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND CO-WORKERS
  • Should less educated citizens get extra help in getting to the polls and understanding the machinery? Is that fair?
  • Should all citizens be required to vote and fined if they don't?
  • Should registration be allowed right up to and including voting day?
